Painting. It is an oasis for my soul.

I (Satomi) have loved reading and painting since I was a little girl, and when I was doing these two things I was so immersed in them that I couldn't even hear the sounds around me.

I went to the University of Foreign Languages in Tokyo, but I couldn't break my love for art, so at the age of 25 I quit my job and enrolled at Winchester School of Art after taking a foundation course in the UK for a year. However, the tuition fees were too high for me to continue, so on the recommendation of an Italian friend, I went to Italy to visit schools and, as I was interested in creating three-dimensional objects at the time, I attended Le Arti Orafe, a metal engraving school in Florence.

After graduating from school, I continued painting while

working part-time, but after Rinaldo and I got married and had children, I was busy with work and raising our children, so I took a break from painting for a while.

I started painting again in April this year (2024), now that my children are grown up and I have a bit more time to spare. After 18 years away from painting, I was surprised to find myself so absorbed in it that I lost track of time.

Much of my work is inspired by my favourite nature and animals, beautiful landscapes I have visited or stayed in, and my favourite moon.

I used to work with oils, watercolours and acrylics, but now I use Japanese watercolours (GANSAI&TEPPACHI). I hope you can feel the unique colours and warmth of Japanese watercolour painting!
